VinFast Sells Over 20,000 Electric Vehicles in August, Solidifying Market Leadership in Vietnam

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has announced another milestone month, delivering 20,161 electric cars to customers across the country in August. This robust performance brings the automaker’s cumulative sales for the first eight months of the year to 154,073 units, firmly anchoring its position as the market leader in Vietnam’s rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
Maintaining a monthly sales volume above the 20,000-unit threshold during August—a period traditionally associated with the Vietnamese Lunar Seventh Month, often called the "Ghost Month," when consumer spending and major purchases tend to slow down—underscores the remarkable resilience and growing consumer demand for electric mobility in the region.
VF 3 Drives Retail Momentum Amid Seasonal Lulls
At the forefront of VinFast’s August sales surge was the VF 3, which captured the title of the brand’s best-selling model for the month. The micro-car recorded 6,453 sales in August, bringing its cumulative total since the beginning of the year to 35,798 units. The compact urban vehicle continues to capture the imagination and purchasing power of Vietnamese drivers thanks to its distinctive personality, compact footprint, low operating costs, and high suitability for dense, everyday urban commuting.
Ranking second in the manufacturer’s lineup was the VF 5, which achieved 4,265 deliveries—including sales of its Herio Green variant—elevating its year-to-date total to 27,948 units. Meanwhile, the Limo Green, an electric MPV specifically tailored for commercial transport and passenger service operators, maintained steady performance with 4,203 units sold in August and a cumulative total of 34,991 units since January.

VinFast’s wider product ecosystem also contributed significantly to the monthly tally. The VF 6 and VF 7 models registered 1,256 and 695 units respectively in August. Cumulative figures for these models stand at 15,943 units for the VF 6 and 7,820 units for the VF 7. Industry observers note that these figures demonstrate strong competitiveness within the highly contested B-SUV and C-SUV segments, where VinFast electric models have consistently outperformed numerous traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) competitors. Other models, such as the VF 8 and the Minio Green, recorded 834 and 698 units sold during the month, respectively.
Strategic Growth and Market Dominance
Ms. Duong Thi Thu Trang, Global Deputy CEO of VinFast Automotive Sales, highlighted the unique positioning of the domestic market within the global green transition.
"Vietnam is one of the markets with the fastest transition to electric vehicles globally, and market share has increased significantly over the past period," Ms. Trang stated. "With strong support from consumers and a robust plan for vehicle deliveries and new product launches in the final four months of the year, VinFast will soon break its sales records to set a new benchmark, creating a new milestone in the Vietnamese automotive market."
VinFast’s upward trajectory is underpinned by a prolonged period of market dominance. The company has maintained its position as the best-selling automotive brand in the domestic market for 24 consecutive months, starting from September 2024. This sustained performance has driven the overall market share of electric vehicles to unprecedented heights. Last year, VinFast achieved a record-breaking 175,099 vehicle sales—the highest annual volume ever recorded by a single automotive brand in the approximately 30-year history of Vietnam’s domestic automotive industry.
Chronology and Infrastructure Support
The rapid maturation of VinFast’s production and delivery capabilities reflects a concerted multi-year strategy. Founded as a domestic startup aiming to build a globally competitive Vietnamese car brand, the company completed its strategic pivot away from internal combustion engines to exclusively produce battery-electric vehicles by the end of 2022. Since then, it has systematically rolled out a diverse portfolio spanning micro-cars, mainstream SUVs, and commercial transport solutions.

To alleviate consumer hesitancy regarding charging infrastructure and ownership costs, VinFast has maintained aggressive ecosystem incentives. Chief among these is the ongoing program allowing drivers of VinFast electric vehicles to enjoy free battery charging at V-Green public charging stations nationwide through February 10, 2029. This policy, combined with model-specific financial promotions and warranties, has created a compelling economic value proposition for both retail and commercial fleet buyers.
Upcoming Product Pipeline and Fourth-Quarter Outlook
Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, VinFast plans to accelerate its delivery schedule and expand its product offerings. The automaker is scheduled to begin deliveries of the upgraded VF 8 and the newly developed VF 2, alongside plans to introduce further flagship products to the market.
Industry analysts point out that VinFast’s ability to consistently clear the 20,000-monthly-sales barrier during historically slow retail periods indicates a fundamental structural shift in consumer preferences rather than a temporary promotional spike. As charging infrastructure continues to expand via V-Green and consumer familiarity with electric vehicle maintenance grows, the domestic automotive market appears poised for even greater electrification milestones as the year draws to a close.
